Mestia has everything from budget guesthouses to boutique stays. For convenience, book within a few minutes of the town center — close to restaurants, the Hatsvali gondola and tour departures. And if you'd rather be slightly away from the center's noise and bustle, Winterfell Mestia is the best place for you: surrounded by nothing but mountains and nature, with a panoramic sauna, outdoor hot tub, bar, billiards, a shop nearby and free parking.
What is the best luxury hotel in Mestia?

How much does accommodation cost in Mestia?
Budget guesthouses start around GEL 50–100 per night, mid-range hotels run GEL 150–300, and premium chalets start from about GEL 350. Guesthouse prices are real — but you trade comfort for the savings, especially in winter: rooms can be cold, bathing can be chilly, and Mestia heats on electricity, so during the frequent winter power cuts many guesthouses without generators lose both light and heat. In return you get wonderful, warm Georgian hospitality. At Winterfell, two backup generators guarantee power and heat at all times, every chalet has a fully equipped kitchen, a private yard with a BBQ grill, and bathrooms with heated floors — washing up stays warm and comfortable. Prices peak in ski season (January–March) and trekking months (July–August); book those dates 2–3 months ahead.
Getting There
How do I get to Mestia from Tbilisi?
Three options: fly with Vanilla Sky from Natakhtari airfield (50 minutes, about GEL 90–120, weather-dependent); take the 08:15 train to Zugdidi (~6 hours, from GEL 16) then a marshrutka to Mestia (~3 hours, GEL 35); or drive — 456 km, 8–10 hours on a paved but winding mountain road.
Is there an airport in Mestia?
Yes — Mestia's Queen Tamar Airport receives small Vanilla Sky planes from Natakhtari (near Tbilisi), taking about 50 minutes. Flights are weather-dependent and can be cancelled in bad conditions, so keep a backup plan. The airport is a few minutes' drive from the town center.
Is the road to Mestia open in winter?
Yes. The Zugdidi–Mestia road is paved and maintained year-round, though snow chains or a 4x4 are recommended after heavy snowfall. Marshrutkas, taxis and flights operate through winter. The scenic Mestia–Ushguli road also stays open most of the winter, with short closures during heavy snow.
Skiing
When is the ski season in Mestia?
The season usually runs from late December to late March or early April. In 2025/26, Hatsvali operated December 27 – March 29 and Tetnuldi January 4 – April 9. For the most reliable snow, come between mid-February and mid-March.
How much is a ski pass in Mestia?
A day pass for the 2025/26 season costs GEL 50 for adults (13+) and GEL 25 for children 6–12; under 6 ski free. Passes are valid at both Tetnuldi and Hatsvali. A season multipass (~GEL 500) also covers Gudauri, Bakuriani and Goderdzi.
Where do you stay when skiing Tetnuldi?
In Mestia — there is no accommodation at the Tetnuldi resort itself. Everyone stays in town and drives up (about 30 minutes by SUV or shuttle). Winterfell Mestia's chalets are a popular ski base: sauna and hot tub for tired legs, and the Hatsvali gondola runs straight from town.
How far is Hatsvali from Mestia?
About 8 km. The easiest way up is the gondola, which departs within walking distance of Mestia center. By car it's a 15–20 minute drive; a return taxi costs around GEL 40. At the top, the Zuruldi restaurant (2,347 m) has glass walls with views of Ushba.

How many days do you need in Mestia?
Minimum two days, ideally three to four. That covers the Svaneti Museum and Svan towers, a day trip to Ushguli, and one big hike — Koruldi Lakes or Chalaadi Glacier. Skiers and serious trekkers often stay a week.
When is the best time to visit Mestia?
For skiing: mid-February to mid-March, when snow is most reliable. For hiking: June to September, when high trails like Koruldi Lakes are clear. September brings golden colors and fewer crowds. Winter outside ski season is quiet and atmospheric — sauna weather.
Is Mestia worth visiting?
Absolutely. Mestia is the heart of Upper Svaneti, a UNESCO World Heritage region famous for medieval Svan towers, glaciers, and some of the best hiking and skiing in the Caucasus. In 2022 the UNWTO named it one of the world's best tourism villages.
Is Mestia safe?
Yes — Mestia is considered very safe for tourists, with low crime and famously hospitable locals. Standard precautions apply, as anywhere. The main risks are nature-related: check weather before hikes, and use a 4x4 or experienced driver on mountain roads in winter.

How do I get to Ushguli from Mestia?
Ushguli is 60–90 minutes from Mestia by a sealed mountain road. A shared Delica taxi costs about GEL 70 per person return, or around GEL 300 for a whole car. Your accommodation can arrange it — at Winterfell we organize Ushguli transfers for guests daily in season.
What are the best hikes from Mestia?
